Grand Central Atelier

The Grand Central Atelier is a collaborative workspace for artists pursuing the methodology of historic ateliers to create drawing, painting and sculpture from life. To ensure a deep understanding of classical form, design, practice, and discipline, artists-in-training work in a structured, organized studio with the hands on guidance of the studio’s principle artists. To educate the public about classically-inspired art, the studio sponsors lectures, artistic competitions, exhibitions and public discussions.

The Grand Central Atelier occupies a loft in the classical 1880’s limestone General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen building. This building is in Midtown Manhattan, two blocks from Grand Central Terminal, the New York Public Library, and Times Square.

The building also houses the GCA’s sister organization, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) with its Beaux-Arts Atelier (BAA), an intensive architecture program based on the pedagogy of the École des Beaux-Arts. The ICAA offers many other valuable resources in its promotion of classicism in America, and GCA students are invited to participate in Institute and Beaux-Arts colloquia.

Artists work with an historic cast collection donated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in studios featuring large rooms, high ceilings, with easels, casts, and models that are spaciously situated and well lit.
