FAA Sweden was established in the geographic center of Scandinavia to give students proximity to the cultural capitals and major museums of Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm. The school’s location in Mölndal, a picturesque town surrounded by the natural beauty of Sweden’s forests and lakes, instead, offers students a quiet place for study. Mölndal is also home to a decorative arts museum, theater, and large community of artists, and a short ride on public transport from Gothenburg, a thriving university town. The FAA’s studio atmosphere is of an intimate atelier-school with students at different levels in the curriculum working next to each other. Beginners have the chance to watch and learn from the more advanced. In addition, the private studios of FAA Sweden’s faculty are in the studio. This close proximity and access to the instructors allows for daily interaction between students and faculty, and the opportunity to watch professional artists at work. At the same time, students are part of a large organization, with all the benefits that come with it. As a student, you are encouraged to spend time in both Florence and New York through our internal exchange program; as a graduate, you have access to the academy’s expanding presence on the international art scene.
The Florence Academy of Art in Sweden is located on the top floor of a renovated paper mill. Custom designed skylights provide natural north light to the 5500-square foot space. The Swedish campus is an exact replica of the original academy in Florence: its teaching method, standards for graduation, and the physical setup of the studio are the same. Academic Director, Andreas Birath, and our instructors are graduates of the program and therefore trained in the philosophy and methodology guiding the Florence
studio. As a result, students may transfer seamlessly into the same level at the Florence or New York branches without experiencing any difference in the curriculum or instructional language, or they may spend a trimester of study as an exchange student at one of our locations. For students in Mölndal, the vicinity to Gothenburg (only a mile away) allows them access to the Gothenburg Museum of Art with its extensive 19th century collection, including paintings by Anders Zorn, Albert Edelfeldt, Peder Severin Kröyer, Edouard Dantan, all painters of significance to the Academy’s training. The Florence Academy of Art is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) as an undergraduate Certificate program.
