Braitman Studio

Braitman Studio offers serious art instruction to adults and teens.  Founded in 1995, we started with one class of 10 adults and one teen class.  We currently offer a broad range of weekly classes, 3 to 5 annual workshops, and a biannual painting trip abroad.  Approximately 150 artists paint here weekly, and we have been forced to maintain waiting lists for most of our classes.

Our instructors cater to the individual, while emphasizing the mechanics of painting and drawing.  The goal of our “process” driven program is to develop each person’s artistic individuality.  “If you are true to the process, the product will be good,” says studio owner Andy Braitman. “The painting process is a genuine and passionate exploration of the mechanics of painting.

Braitman studio offers a setting designed to emphasize the studio experience in a friendly approachable environment.  Andy Braitman is a celebrated artist with many years of experience in the art world, and has chosen and trained a team of teachers to  enhance your studio experience.  Our approach is sophisticated, yet comprehensive, sharing the joy of painting with new painters while also enriching and expanding the experience of advanced painters.  Even exhibiting painters seem to find value in our environment.

Support is an important aspect of the studio.  “For students to find their own success, we create an environment where it’s safe to experiment and to try new things,” says Braitman. “For that reason, we remove the show-and-tell aspect in our classes and find a way to creatively redirect the new painter when he or she becomes too timid or exuberant.

Former studio instructor and artist Carol Mitchell describes Braitman Studio as “the best-kept secret in Charlotte. There simply is nowhere else in town where you can get the type and level of instruction offered at this studio.” Several local and regional artists have studied at the studio, and are currently exhibiting their work in area galleries including: Sofia’s, Shain Fine Art, Providence Gallery, Chasen Galleries, Marlese Newman’s gallery, Three French Hens, Windsor Hall, and Christ Church Galleries.

The studio offers a variety of classes including landscape, figure drawing, portrait painting, and small “5 to 1” classes where students receive highly personalized instruction. Classes for teens include directed studies to prepare portfolios for college application, as well as more general classes explore a variety of media not always available in school art classes.

Braitman Studio teen artists regularly fill the very top ranks of the Scholastic Art Award winners. Students trained at the Braitman Studio have gone on to pursue the study of art and design at such prestigious schools as Carnegie-Mellon, The Pratt Institute, The Maryland Institute of Art, Parsons School of Design, the Design School at North Carolina State University, and the Savannah School of Art and Design.
