About

The Art School Database is a free online resource aimed at students, instructors, professionals or anyone interested in arts education.

The goal of this website is to provide a place where those curious about improving their artistic abilities—whether in drawing, painting, sculpture, digital or traditional—can find instruction that fits their needs.

Why ArtSchooldb?

During my senior year in high school I knew I wanted to pursue a career in art but had no idea how to do so.  Most art schools were located hundreds of miles away and were incredibly expensive to attend.

The studio art program at the university I attended wasn’t much help either.  My interest was in representational drawing and painting, which was taught, but only in foundation classes.  The rest of the art major’s curriculum was dominated by art history, graphic design, and theory.

I gave up on the idea of finding a suitable instructor to teach me and decided I would have to teach myself.  I started collecting books on drawing, painting, anatomy, composition and artist biographies.  I searched for websites that would give me insight into the process of my favorite painters and illustrators.  I contacted artists and asked them (in retrospect) really stupid questions.

The result of my self-directed learning was a very eclectic and disjointed understanding of drawing and painting.

The Art School Database is something I wish had existed ten years ago.  It would have saved me a lot of time and frustration to have all of this information in one place.

I hope it is useful to you.
